Big Sky is located in the Gallatin Canyon, off MT Hwy 191, 45 miles south of Bozeman, Montana, and 45 miles north of West Yellowstone, the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It’s a beautiful drive along the Gallatin River, where “A River Runs Through It “was filmed.
What is the nearest airport?
There are two airports near Big Sky, Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport in Belgrade and Yellowstone Airport in West Yellowstone. There are 21 nonstop flights to cities across the country from the Bozeman airport, making access more effortless than ever. The West Yellowstone Airport is equal distance but operates seasonally from May through October.
Is Big Sky open year-round?
Yes. You’ll find dining, shopping, music, and other entertainment year-round in Big Sky. However, Big Sky Resort does have specific winter and summer operating hours, so if you are planning to visit the resort, check to be sure the amenities will be open.
How far is Big Sky from Yellowstone National Park?
Big Sky is 45 miles from West Yellowstone, where the Park’s west entrance is located. The drive is short enough to make it a day trip, but if you plan on spending more than one day, it’s worth an overnight closer to the entrance.

As of the 2020 census, there are 3,054 residents in Big Sky. But, of course, that number feels much more significant during the busy seasons, such as winter holidays and summer break.
What are the average temperatures in Big Sky?
Beginning in May, temperatures rise to around 60 degrees, reaching the 70s and 80s in July and August. Summer evenings linger at about 60 degrees. Winter temperatures last from November through March or April and average around 25 degrees, perfect for snowfall.
How should I dress?
Layers are the name of the game. It can be sunny and warm in the morning, with unexpected storms in the afternoons. No matter the season, bring a waterproof outer layer, warm base layers, socks, hats, and gloves. If it’s summer, don’t forget lightweight, breathable fabrics and lots of sunscreen!
What is the best time to visit?
Any time is a great time to visit Big Sky! It all depends on your interests. People often enjoy skiing in the winter and return to hike, fish, and bike in the summer. Fall weather is generally cooler but still beautiful for exploring. Spring is lovely with the wildflowers, but it can also be rainy and can snow late into the season. However, fishing can be great, and it’s the best time for whitewater rafting!

Are there amenities at Big Sky?
Yes! Big Sky Town Center sits at the heart of the area and continuously expands its dining, shopping, and entertainment options. Len Park is home to Music in the Mountains, a free weekly concert each Thursday in the summer, and BASE, Big Sky’s Community and Recreation Center, offers Pickleball, indoor cycling, yoga, and climbing. Big Sky has 50 restaurants, bars, and eateries and over 40 shops and spas. Lone Peak Cinema, Roxy’s Market, and Ace Hardware are included in that. In addition, big Sky Medical Center has a campus near The Meadow, providing excellent health care.
What is there to do besides ski?
Plenty! Many people love summer as much as they love winter. Big Sky Resort offers lift-assisted downhill mountain biking, zip lining, scenic lift rides, golf, whitewater rafting, and horseback riding. The area has hundreds of miles of hiking trails, fishing, photography, and Yellowstone National Park. During the winter, in addition to skiing, you can zip-line, ice skate, dogsled, or snowshoe!
