Things to do in Livingston and Paradise Valley, Montana

Livingston, Montana, the original gateway town to Yellowstone National Park, started as a railroad town. Today, it’s known for exceptional fishing, floating on the Yellowstone River, and many other outdoor adventures. But it’s also known for having incredible shopping, dining, music, and cultural events. This little town is bustling with activity – rarely will you find a week without something special happening. Below are a few of our favorite things to do in Livingston and Paradise Valley; there’s a lot to explore in this neck of the woods!

Take a Guided Fishing or Floating Tour on the Yellowstone River

At 692 miles, the Yellowstone River is the longest free-flowing river in the Lower 48. From its headwaters in Yellowstone National Park, the river flows through Paradise Valley and the town of Livingston, one of the most famous stretches of river for fly fishing and scenic floats. The Yellowstone is a mighty river, with stretches requiring skilled navigation techniques, so floating without a guide is not recommended. You can find a list of recreational services at Explore Livingston.

See Live Music Under the Stars

There are three outdoor music venues in Livingston, Pine Creek LodgeOld Saloon, and Music Ranch Montana, and they all draw some impressive talent. In addition to great music, you’re immersed in gorgeous 360-degree views, making the experience even more special. The Attic, located in town, hosts more intimate shows, as do many local taverns.

Attend An Art Walk

The art scene is thriving in Livingston; there are nineteen art galleries and two museums for a town of fewer than 8,500 people! Every fourth Friday throughout the summer and once in the winter, the Livingston Gallery Association hosts Art Walks throughout the city. Galleries stay open later, with artists’ openings and receptions, including some great nibbles. Watch the schedule for upcoming walks.

Enjoy Incredible Food

There are so many delightful restaurants in Livingston; it would take some time to try them all! Cuisines run the gamut with Thai, Italian, Mexican, French, and creative American bistro fare. There are two breweries, one which serves some great sushi, and during the summer months, Mark’s In and Out is a must-do.

Shop at Unique Boutiques

It seems around every corner, there’s another boutique retail store, and they are not to be missed. Specialty shops like record stores, kitchen supplies, and plant stores line the blocks. New fashion and vintage clothing fill the clothing and thrift stores, and several home stores are filled to the brim with treasures.

Peruse the Bookstores

Livingston is a draw for famous authors such as the late George Harrison, and the literary community is incredibly active. You’ll find new and used selections, a wide variety of Montana authors, and ongoing events such as book readings, signings, and author presentations.

Soak in a Hot Springs

There are two natural hot springs in Paradise Valley, Chico Hot Springs and Yellowstone Hot Springs. Both are beautiful experiences; Yellowstone Hot Springs is more extensive, with more pools and an utterly outdoor feel, whereas Chico offers dining, drinks, live music, and accommodations.
